Who are we?
We are the Phoenix Bowmen, a target archery club based at Illingworth in Halifax, Yorkshire. We are a well-established club with a growing and active membership.
We are affiliated to the Grand National Archery Society, the Northern Counties Archery Society and the Yorkshire Archery Association.
Our location is at Halifax RUFC's ground on Keighley Road (the A629). We shoot both indoors and outdoors, depending on the season and the weather. We shoot recurves, compounds and English longbows. All shooting at the club is target shooting, but our members also take part in field archery and clout archery shoots.
We usually shoot imperial rounds, but are happy to accommodate metric rounds. Our main shoot is on Sunday afternoons from noon. We also shoot outdoors on Saturday mornings from 10:30 AM.
All practising, prospective and returning archers are welcome. Day members are welcome. We can lend club equipment to people wanting to give archery a try. The facilities are safe for children.
Please note that we do not have suitable facilities for crossbows (and our constitution excludes the use of crossbows at the club) and we may not be able to handle large groups.
Learning, or having a go
We run have-a-go sessions regularly, on request. We have run many sessions for schools, scout groups, Boys Brigades and community groups. We're happy to provide have-a-go sessions for individuals and groups during our regular shooting sessions.
We run beginners courses during the outdoor season - see the Beginners page for more details. Our next set of courses will start on the 13th of May 2009, running on Wednesday evenings. Please note that the next set of beginners courses after that will be in September. A page of notes has been created for people participating in the course:
