The club runs beginner’s courses in West Yorkshire that last for four sessions; one session per week at either our indoor or outdoor locations in West Yorkshire.
All beginners are required to complete this course before they can become full members. Archers with appropriate previous experience are NOT required to complete this course in order to become full members.
The course is intended to get you up to a standard where you can shoot safely and with enjoyment.
Upcoming Beginner’s Courses Beginner’s courses are run over four sessions and are held at our indoor and/or our outdoor ranges.
Next course is: Open for Sundays from the 20th, 27th September, 4th and 11th of October.
please e-mail tryarchery@phoenixbowmen.co.uk to register your interest a beginner’s course.
The total cost of a beginner’s course is £60 for each participant, all equipment is provided.
Archery has no upper age limit; some people continue well into their eighties.
We have a lower age limit of 11 years old to join the club.
Archery is an accessible sport and accommodations are possible for people with disabilities and medical conditions.
Our national association has issued some guidelines on protecting children and vulnerable adults. We follow these guidelines.
We require that a parent or guardian accompanies children under 14 years of age throughout the duration of the beginner’s course.
The parents or guardians of any children attending the beginner’s course must read and sign a consent form. This form is available in advance on request.
Similar considerations apply to vulnerable adults. The exact rules will depend on the nature and severity of the vulnerability.
For shooting sessions, children aged 14 years or under can shoot only if there are at least two adults present. These adults must be club members, parents, or guardians. At least one of these adults must be a member of Phoenix Bowmen.
Our Coaches give their time for free, we require plenty of notice to either fill a spot that you can no longer attend, or to give them back the time to enjoy the sport themselves.
We require a minimum of 7 days’ notice for you to receive a full refund. If only 4 days’ notice is given, we will return 50% of the Beginner’s Course fee and if less than 24 hours notice is given, no refund will be given.
Courses run both indoors and outdoors. This means that you should wear clothing appropriate to the conditions.
For outdoor shooting you are advised to wear clothing that is warm and not too loose (since loose clothing can catch on the bow string). Bring a waterproof top or cagoule in case of rain. When choosing footwear, bear in mind that you’ll be walking on grass.
If you have your own equipment it is recommended that you bring something to cover your bag if there is rain.
There can also of course be sun too. Make sure you bring plenty of water and use sun protection products and maybe a nice Phoenix Bowmen bucket hat!
We advise completing the Beginner’s Course and gaining some experience using the club’s equipment before making a purchase. The club has a number of bows and sets of arrows that beginners may use, and club members will have plenty of advice on what equipment will suit you.
If you already have equipment, it will not be possible for you to use it during the Beginner’s Course. The terms of our insurance cover require that the only equipment used on Beginner’s Course is club equipment.
